The level of accountability that the public have in politicians is important as is trust. Trust is easily lost when false promises are made to win elections. An obvious example of this is right here in Crawley, when in May’s local elections Labour’s leaflets promised to take pride in Crawley’s neighbourhoods and falsely claimed that “last time the Conservatives couldn’t even keep the grass cut.”
Under a Labour Council in Crawley, no one has to travel far to see ‘Labour’s pride’ of knee-high grass verges, streets covered in litter, abandoned supermarket trollies and the town’s streets plastered with several hundred flyposted boards advertising a fairground. Crawley’s Labour Administration being discredited within a month of an election loses trust, but there is accountability as people have the option to vote for a change next time.
In the UK we can change political control of councils but governments of whatever political colour are becoming increasingly less accountable because of the European Union. The EU is taking evermore control of our country’s decision-making powers and that takes away accountability from our own democratically elected politicians. Governments will tell us they can’t do this, can’t do that, not because they don’t want to but because the EU won’t allow it. This will only get worse if we remain a member.
The EU has never had any real accountability but left unchecked, this lack of accountability will increasingly transfer to the governments of EU members. The only way to ‘give a check’ to the EU is for a major country to leave it and we have that opportunity in two weeks on Thursday the 23rd. Make no mistake, this vote is much bigger than the UK. This is why ‘International Project Fear’ from the Remain side has been deployed because the powers that be in the EU know that their powers will be reduced if anyone’s EU membership is no longer seen as irreversible.
We need to bring back accountability to our country and stop the further erosion of it. It is time to take back control. Let’s make June 23rd Britain’s Independence Day.
