We have now had a full week of the emergency restriction measures and it is good to see the vast majority of Crawley residents playing their part and ultimately helping to save lives. Such measures are unprecedented but sadly necessary. We are seeing the same across Europe and in much of the world.
At the weekend, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that things will get worse before they get better. This is a grim reality and there is no getting away from the fact that April will not be a good month. All of us are affected to some degree, but all of us can and will turn things around.
We are seeing a national effort that is bringing people together. Our sense of community has never been stronger as people look out for each other, help each other, and make sacrifices in their everyday lives. While adversity is never welcome, the Coronavirus crisis is bringing out the best in us.
One way I believe this will change us is in how we appreciate each other and the jobs that people do. Those on the front line in the NHS and Care Workers were rightly recognised by the nation in the fantastic applause we gave them last Thursday evening, and I’m proud to say that Crawley did not disappoint! But we are also appreciating everyone who is keeping essential services going, often at increased risk to their own health, and this crisis has helped to focus our minds as to the value society places on them.
Last week I praised our supermarket workers and this week I’d like to thank our refuse collectors who are out in all weathers and dealing with greater amounts of household waste as we stay at home. With everyday life going back to basics, it really makes you think about those you depend on and whom many may have previously taken for granted.
This new month ahead will be tough in many ways, but united in support for each other, we will get through it. Ultimately, sacrificing our liberty will save lives here in Crawley.
