It is hardly breaking news when I say that Christmas is almost here. Indeed, politicians of all parties will be wishing us all a merry Christmas in the coming days. This is nice, but much less common is politicians going that little bit further and referencing what Christmas really is about - the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. For some reason, it seems very easy to highlight the cultural side of Christmas that have become traditions in their own right, but not the true meaning of Christmas itself which is of course religious.
We see politicians throughout the year giving other faith groups their best wishes when an event of significance occurs that is of their religion. This is something I welcome as in public life we represent the entire population, which is rich in its variety, especially here in Crawley. But when it comes to Christianity, which the largest faith here in the UK, sometimes politicians seem a little bit shy.
I sometimes wonder if some have a view that promoting the true meaning of Christmas is somehow thought of as offensive to other religious groups? If so, I would say this belief is very much mistaken and misguided. I’ve never met anyone of any different faith who is offended by Christmas. Stories (usually online) of people ‘not being able’ to put up Christmas decorations for ‘fear of offence’ to others are virtually all without exception, fake news that is deliberately designed to stir up bad feelings.
Christmas today means different things to different people and of course most people of no religious faith as well as people of other faiths also celebrate it, albeit in a secular way. It is a time that families and friends come together as well as an opportunity for rest and relaxation as the year draws to a close. I also think it is a time to be thankful for what we have. I would like to wish all readers a very happy and peaceful Christmas however you may celebrate it, but let us not lose sight of the true meaning.
